“The Trouble with Performance or In Defense of Theater”
This research project interrogates why some of the most innovative contemporary productions are generally viewed as “performance” rather than “theater.” The antipathy that theater meets with today does not do justice to its history as an art form that elicited passionate philosophical debates. As I explore the roots of this shift, and the link between historical avant-garde movements and contemporary theatrical forms, I hope to prompt the reader to consider which performances move us today and, maybe principally, why.
